Chest & Breast Surgery

PECTORAL IMPLANTS:JPectoral implants can be surgically inserted to augment the male chest wall. Safe, synthetic implants are used to provide additional projection of the chest wall, enhancing the appearance—and often the self-image—of the patient.

The specifics of the operation vary from patient to patient according to his needs and desires. During his consultation with the patient, Dr. DeWeese discusses the amount of augmentation desired, along with the preferred shape of the chest. Pectoral implants have been very successful in allowing patients to achieve increased fullness; and, because the implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, the muscle itself is still able to supply natural looking muscle definition.

In addition, this operation may serve to correct a congenital deformity or tear of the pectoral muscle.

With adequate pre-operative consultation, careful preparation, attention to detail intra-operatively, and vigilant post-operative care, patient satisfaction after this type of plastic surgery is generally very high.

The Surgical Procedure

The procedure takes around two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Typically, the procedure is done through an incision in the axilla (armpit) area, with solid silicone implants being placed underneath the pectoralis muscle. These implants do not contain silicone gel.

What to Expect After pectoral implants Surgery

The most common mistake patients make after this surgery is not resting enough. The chest will feel somewhat sore for the first few days, and improve over the next week or two. It is imperative not to resume strenuous physical activity for a month following pectoral implant surgery. A compression garment controls pain and swelling, and minimizes overexertion in the first month.

Bench pressing and doing push-ups too soon after the procedure will often result in a collection of fluid or serum around the implant, which has to be drained with a needle and syringe.
