Nowhere does age leave its imprint more deeply than on the face. Many factors contribute to facial wrinkling and discoloration, including sun exposure, smoking, improper diet and nutrition, alcohol consumption, stress and heredity.

Facial rejuvenation treatment may involve procedures to reduce signs of aging in the mid-face, lower face and neck, as well as the eyelids, forehead and eyebrow areas. Treatments to minimize fine skin lines may also be performed. Frequently, multiple facial procedures can be performed at the same time.

But skincare is about far more than just surgical rejuvenation procedures. To maintain your skin’s optimal level of health and beauty—whether or not you’ve benefitted from surgery—it is essential to follow a daily care regimen that is tailored to your unique face and body. At Looking Glass, our onsite licensed clinical aesthetician is an expert at creating and administering skincare plans specifically formulated for our clients’ anatomical needs and health objectives.

Going Chiral: The Importance of Chirality for our Bodies

The most important molecules of life are “chiral.” Chiral molecules are exactly the same in every way, except that, like our hands, they are mirror images of each other. They are said to have a left or right chemical orientation. An example of the significance of this distinction can be seen in amino acids. In practice, the human body uses only left-handed amino acids. The labels of common protein supplements contain terms such as “L-glutamic acid” or “L-proline,” signifying the left-handed versions of the acids. Right-handed amino acids do exist, but your body is not able to use them effectively.

What happens if the wrong-handed molecule is used? It depends on the molecule, but in the late 1950's and early 1960's, Thalidomide was given to pregnant women as a morning-sickness drug. The drug company supplied a mixture of both left-handed and right-handed Thalidomide because it was easier to produce this way. Unfortunately, one version of the molecule is a good sedative; the other causes birth defects. The drug company knew about the drug chirality, but did not investigate the long-term consequences, eventually resulting in thousands of horrible birth defects.

A Brief Lesson and Some Examples of Chirality

Limonene is a naturally occurring chemical found in over 300 varieties in plants, most notably citrus. If you were to buy Limonene—either natural or synthetic—you would be getting a mixture of L-Limonene and D-Limonene. This is the way it occurs in man’s laboratory and nature’s laboratory. These molecules are mirror images of one another left handed limonene (L- Limonene) and right handed limonene (D -Limonene) It is a hard to believe that molecules as similar as your two hands could be so different, but they are very different.

They smell different and taste different, but more importantly D-Limonene (the right-handed one) is the industrial twin and the L-Limonene (the left-handed one) is the medicinal twin.

D-Limonene is a popular industrial cleanser, degreaser and tire solvent (for recycling tires). D-Limonene is a powerful promoter of free radicals and is known to increase the likelihood of birth effects; but, more importantly, it blocks the beneficial effects of L-Limonene and other chiral essences in nature, many of which are lifesaving and life giving. L-Limonene can prevent the growth of cancer, suppresses the production of gall stones, reduces the risk and progression of Alzheimer’s, enhances memory, is a powerful anti-viral in the body, is anti-fungal and is a good sedative. Therefore, using the twin Limonene molecules together, as they occur in nature and in the lab, is risky.

Taxol from the Yew tree is used in treating breast cancer. In its natural form it contains the L-Taxol and the D-Taxol. Only L-Taxol has the intended anti-cancer effects, while D-Taxol causes more toxicity to the body than the cancer.

Nicotine is also chiral. It occurs in tobacco as the left handed nicotine, but right handed nicotine is much less addictive and much less toxic.

As you can see, chiral correctness is important when it comes to what we put in and on our bodies.
